A massive headache greeted Brenton Wright(not his first hangover this week)as he struggled to keep his eyes open. He held his head with one hand and shaded his eyes from the sun with the other. When his eyes adjusted, he stood, wobbled, and braced himself by placing a hand on the wall.
“Holy shit,” he said. “What a wild fucking night.” His words were soft, keeping the volume of his voice just above a whisper, and tolerable to his aching head.
Brenton’s memory went blank just after leaving the restaurant, but judging by the state of his bedroom—clothes and bedding tossed around haphazardly—he knew Jess was the ‘wild fuck’ he imagined she was. He chuckled to himself before heading to the bathroom and relieving his overfull bladder.
After his usual stop at Starbucks, Brenton arrived at the office, noticing Jess’s car in the spot she always used at the end of the lot. He took a large gulp of coffee while conjuring up sultry imagery of the two of them entangled in each other’s arms and legs. Sweating and panting, not knowing where his body ended and hers began, he could feel himself stiffening.
Save it for later, ol’ boy. I’m sure after a night like that, she’ll be begging for it on the reg’, he thought. Brenton dropped two aspirin into his palm, tossed them in his mouth and downed them with another healthy gulp of coffee. Just before he exited his car, he caught his reflection in the rearview mirror, threw the handsome devil a wink, and left.
As he got off the elevator, his eyes darted directly to Jess’s desk, where he saw her typing away on her keyboard. Not wanting to head directly into his office just yet, Brenton strolled around the half-dozen other desks before approaching Hannah’s.
“Morning,” he said in a firm, but too-loud voice.
“Good morning, Mr. Wright.” Hannah looked up at him. “Long night?”
“Oh, I don’t know about that.” He felt a slight blush rise to his cheeks. “I may have tied one on. What’s my schedule look like today?”
He watched as her hands danced from keyboard to mouse and back again—as if casting a technological spell to fulfill his request—before turning back to him.
“Looks like you have a follow-up divorce consultation at eleven. And then prepare for the Benson case this afternoon. Don’t forget, you have court tomorrow morning.” The hard, stern look she gave him caused Brenton Wright to imagine her with the same look, and less clothing.
“Right,” he said, looking over at Jess, trying to appear casual. “Bring the casefiles to me sometime after lunch. Thanks, doll.” He winked at Hannah and strutted away.
He came peacocking up to Jess’s desk where she simply ignored him, continuing to peck away at the keyboard. He cleared his throat to get her attention.
“Ugh, well good morning.” A big cheesy grin scrolled across his face.
“Morning,” she replied.
“So, um, I guess last night wasn’t too bad?” he said in a hushed tone.
“I suppose. Dinner was... fine.”
“Oh, just fine? And what about dessert?” he asked, making his eyebrows dance up and down.
